Top Information Security Executives in the Mid-Atlantic Region Honored By Their Peers

Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Homeland Security, NASA, and The Washington Post Company Executives Recognized for Their Leadership in Information Security

ATLANTA - May 7, 2009 - The finalists and winners of the 2009 Information Security Executive (ISE®) of the Year Mid-Atlantic Awards held on Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at the Ritz Carlton Downtown in Washington, DC was announced today.

The Awards recognize information security executives and project teams for outstanding achievement in risk management, data asset protection, compliance, privacy and network security. Eligible nominees for the Mid-Atlantic region included Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, DC.

The Information Security Project of the Year for the Mid-Atlantic region was awarded to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for their work efforts and innovation in their project, Safeguarding Citizen Data. Executive sponsor, Erik Avakian, Deputy Chief Information Security Officer, accepted the award on behalf of his organization.

Finalists for the Information Security Project of the Year Mid-Atlantic Awards were also recognized for their achievements in the industry and were showcased during the awards program. In addition to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the finalists include:

  • NASA, with executive sponsor Jerry L. Davis, Deputy Chief Information Officer for IT Security
  • U.S. Navy, with executive sponsor, Jim Granger, Director of Capabilities and Readiness, U.S. Navy Cyber Defense Operations Command

Dr. Douglas Maughan, Branch Chief / Program Lead, Cyber Security, Command, Control & Interoperability Division, S&T Directorate, U.S. Department of Homeland Security was announced as the winner of the Mid-Atlantic Information Security Executive of the Year - Government Category during the gala ceremony on Tuesday evening. The judges were impressed with his vision, research and development, ability to influence and drive change, and his involvement and commitment to the information security community.

Finalists for the Information Security Executive of the Year Mid-Atlantic Awards - Government Category were also recognized for their achievements in the industry and were showcased during the awards program. In addition to Dr. Douglas Maughan, the finalists include:

  • Kevin Deeley, Director of ITSS and Deputy CIO, Department of Justice
  • Robert Maley, Chief Information Security Officer, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

In the commercial category for Executive of the Year, Stacey Halota, Vice President of Information Security and Privacy, was announced as this year's winner. She was selected by the judges due to her broad portfolio of strategic initiatives and high rate of success in achieving the company's goals. Finalists for the Information Security Executive of the Year Mid-Atlantic Awards - Commercial Category were also recognized for their achievements in the industry and were showcased during the awards program. In addition to Stacey Halota, the finalists include:

  • Jon Moore, Chief Information Services Officer, IT Operations, Humana, Inc.
  • Jason Taule, Director of Corporate Information Security, General Dynamics Information Technology, Health IT Solutions

As part of the evening's recognition, NASA's Jerry L. Davis, Deputy Chief Information Officer for IT Security, was announced as the ISE® Mid-Atlantic People's Choice Award Winner. The award represents the nominee who best exemplifies information security leadership as voted on by the registered attendees.
